Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, is used by a person in the United States to apply for lawful permanent resident status.
Generally, when you have a pending Form I-485, you may apply for employment authorization by filing Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization.

When you see that your priority date is current on the “Dates for Filing” chart, don’t wait for the government to call you. If you don’t hear from it within a few weeks, contact the National Visa Center (NVC) and ask for the appropriate instructions (if you're currently overseas).

To file for GC (i485 adjustment of status) for your i140 priority case -

1.  You should be physically in the US
2.  You should be eligible to adjust status (apply for GC with USCIS)
3.  For EBx, priority date should be current as per Visa bulletin info
4.  Be in valid visa status when in the US (you must not have stayed past the expiration of your permitted stay or worked without permission from U.S. immigration authorities)
