Seeing the most recent layoff news from Crunchbase, Stripe, Cruise, Ford Motor Company, Microsoft, Meta and many many others, I thought I’d pitch in with some job search strings that may help those newly and unexpectedly on the market (once you're ready --take some time off, it's a lot to absorb). To save time, I’ll bottom-line-up-front these so you can simply cut & paste into google and hit "enter" if you want, then I’ll explain how they work a bit more in-depth below. Make sure to change the job titles to whatever title you are looking for. YOU GOT THIS!! 👨‍💻 👩‍💻 inurl:careers -inurl:linkedin -inurl:indeed -inurl:ziprecruiter inurl:("job title" OR "alternate title" OR “alternate 3” OR “alternate4”) intext:("SF" OR "san francisco" OR "remote" OR "seattle") 🌲 Greenhouse: inurl:boards.greenhouse.io/* "job title" (ignore the hyperlink --LinkedIn adds that on its own) 📈 Lever: inurl:jobs.lever.co/* "job title" You can also use inurl: to search for other applicant tracking system job pages, like Workday, etc. Just add your own keyword limiter within the quotation marks, then cut/paste each bold-text portion of the bullet separately and enter them into Google (minus the emoji 😅 ) Let's break down the first boolean string: inurl:careers -inurl:linkedin -inurl:indeed -inurl:ziprecruiter (“sr recruiter” OR “Senior Recruiter” OR “staff recruiter” OR “talent acquisition partner”) intext:("SF" OR "san francisco" OR "remote" OR "seattle") -Use the inurl: function to select "careers" or "job" pages on company websites. If you want to x-out a particular company or job board, use -inurl: --the n-dash prior to the inurl: acts as a negative here. -Use AND / NOT / OR operators to get specific OR cast a wider net. Pro-tip: these have to be in caps, AND have to be used within the same parenthetical. ("recruiter" AND "manager"), not "recruiter" AND manager. -Use the intext: function to target specific words within a listing, but be specific & be aware of how this can shrink/widen your aperture: i.e., intext:remote CAN focus on roles that list "remote" as a possibility at the top of the JD but will also target listings that use "remote" anywhere in the job post. -Experiment: don't get discouraged! When you cut/paste into the search bar and get an oops/no results or too many results, take a look at your string, tweak/adjust, and hit it again --nothing ventured nothing gained. View it as a puzzle --keep at it! Also, if you want to reach out to that HM or TA leader directly but don’t have LI Premium or have run out of monthly messages? Hint: 9 times out of 10, the personal profile indicator in their profile URL is their gmail address. Just cut/paste into a new email and add the gmail extension and if it’s their profile, you’ll see their profile info pop up ;) If you want to hit them up at their work email, use a Corp Address finder like Hunter.io or Spokeo.
